  • Notes
    • He and his wife are buried in MT Pleasant Cemetery in Lamar County near Vernon, AL.
George Washington Walden died on March 7, 1912, and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Lamar County, AL near Vernon, AL. George W. Walden had the distinction of having fought on both sides of the Civil War Combatants. He lost a leg from a cannon ball hit at Shiloh near Corinth, MS. and was in a hospital for the remainder of the war. He signed up with the South Carolina regulars and fought with the South until he was captured and imprisoned by the North. While in prison he must have found the conditions very bad and he swore allegiance to the union and they released him to fight with the union army. He lost the leg after he changed sides and refused a pension from both sides. He was due a pension from either side of the conflict.

He was married first in S. C. before he joined the Confederate Army.. Nothing is known of that marriage. After the Civil War he married in Marion County, AL. and later in Lamar County, AL. to my grandmother, Liza Ann Marilla Hoots. He gave the census takers the information that he was born in Tennessee. He seemed to be missing on the 1850 census.
