| 51 | He and his wife are buried in MT Pleasant Cemetery in Lamar County near Vernon, AL. George Washington Walden died on March 7, 1912, and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Lamar County, AL near Vernon, AL. George W. Walden had the distinction of having fought on both sides of the Civil War Combatants. He lost a leg from a cannon ball hit at Shiloh near Corinth, MS. and was in a hospital for the remainder of the war. He signed up with the South Carolina regulars and fought with the South until he was captured and imprisoned by the North. While in prison he must have found the conditions very bad and he swore allegiance to the union and they released him to fight with the union army. He lost the leg after he changed sides and refused a pension from both sides. He was due a pension from either side of the conflict. He was married first in S. C. before he joined the Confederate Army.. Nothing is known of that marriage. After the Civil War he married in Marion County, AL. and later in Lamar County, AL. to my grandmother, Liza Ann Marilla Hoots. He gave the census takers the information that he was born in Tennessee. | 83 | Joel Atkins, who had established his household by 1850,was born in Tennessee, so his father, Spencer, must have moved from his home state of Virginia, to Tennessee, before the family moved to Mississippi and then to Alabama. Joel's wife, Mahaley, was born in either Tennessee or Georgia.Joel, one of six voters in his family in the Vails/Trulls Beat area, owned land in Trulls Beat valued at $1,000, in 1870.His other property was valued at $ 650. He was a good citizen of the area. As early as 1867 he was serving his community on a road committee. He was an election official in 1888,and his sons followed in his footsteps. Possibly, they followed his footsteps in politics, as well. Joel was a strong Democrat and in 1892, he was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee from Vails Beat. A short time later, in Aug. of 1895, Joel died. He left a wife and nine children to mourn his passing, along with land in three sections of Township 17, Range 16, West, as well as lots 35 and 36 in Fernbank, Alabama. | 85 | John Thomas Sprouse is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Lamar County, AL John was a timber cutter by trade. He also did some farming during the summer. Back in those days you had to grow much of what the families ate. One time when he was felling a tree, it slipped off the stump and came backwards and broke his leg. In 1932 he bought a chevrolet truck from his nephew, Raymond Sprouse, and he and his son Arlon hauled lumber, logs and power poles to the markets in Columbus, MS. and MIllport, AL. The truck was an open body, no cab and had single tires on it and the trailer it pulled. This was the vehicle a younger son learned to drive when he was 9 years old. [ Ed Sprouse, yours truly. ] There was no such thing as a drivers license at that time. In early 1934 my dad traded the truck and trailer in for a new 34 Ford truck with dual rear wheels on the truck and also duals on the trailer. I remember the truck price was about 550.00 with no cab. It sure got cold in the winter with all that fresh air. In December 1938 Dad was about to eat breakfast when he had a massive stroke and lived for only 8 days. He never regained consciousness. John Thomas Sprouse died on Dec. 22, 1938 and was buried in Walnut Grove cemetery in Lamar County, AL. He Died of a Massive stroke that left him Paralyzed and could not speak. He died in 1856 in Mississippi and she remarried Lawrence Hoots in 1862. We do not have any record of her maiden name.
